must work very hard until then, though.
Method:
Design: our research is correlational study, using the design of independent groups of which there were 3 consisting of 12 participants in each group. The variables we are correlating are the ratings of ugliness and harm, which participants specify on their questionnaire.
Participants: we used 36 participants in our study, 12 per group. The sampling method we used was an opportunistic sample using p’s aged 16 - 21 and within each groups, using 6 males and 6 females to assure unbiased results. We also specified that none of the participants were studying psychology or had been used for a similar task, as to prevent the development of demand characteristics.
Apparatus or materials: we used a questionairre for each of the participants to fill in, making sure that only their variable was written as to prevent demand characteristics, thus we made 3 different types of questionnaires and 3 different sets of instructions for the participants to follow.
Procedure:
We began by assembling a list of animals, of which there were 20, labelled A-T. in choosing the animals we assured a broad range, as we thought a number of similar animals would bore the P’s and cause them to give the same rating on each animal. To make the material non biased we used pictures of a certain size, using neutral poses and all of the pictures were in colour. Next we defined the scale on which p’s had to rate either the animals ugliness, their fear of the animals or their belief of the animal’s risk of danger. We initially planned to use a scale of 1 - 10 but found it hard to explain clearly what level each number would represent, we then decided to use a smaller scale, and instead of using 1-5, we used a scale of 1- 4 to eliminate the risk of p’s simply choosing the middle rating. We next designed the instructions to give to p’s before completing the task. (copy of instructions) the results were recorded on an individual sheet per p’s so they were not influenced by others opinions of the animals (picture of recording sheet) we complied 3 versions of instructions and of recording sheets naming only one of the variables on each as not to influence the p’s of the purpose of our study and as not to affect their results.
tell me a secret; a love; a fear; and i'll tell you a bed time story.
